Protected area
The Maribo Lakes constitute a very highly prioritised natural area in Denmark. It is a scheduled wildlife preserve and a Natura 2000 habitat area (Natura 2000 is an ecological network of protected natural areas throughout EU). It is the only fresh water area in East Denmark which has been designated a Ramsar site (an international convention for protection of wetlands).
